Magdalena Malena Jankowska
Magdalena Malena Jankowska was born in 1978 in Gdańsk. She is a painter, muralist, and performer. Currently, she resides in both Warsaw and Gdańsk. She completed her studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
After completing her studies, she moved to Warsaw, where she ran her own gallery and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Ermitage Palace at Łazienki Królewskie in Warsaw. However, her wanderlust eventually prevailed.
After five years, the artist closed the gallery and embarked on a search for inspiration around the world. An artistic residency in Poland, France, and Greece, as well as exhibitions in places like Nice, resulted in the development of a unique style. The next stage involved years spent at sea. As a second captain, Malena explored the world from the perspective of a yacht, which led to the creation of numerous maritime-themed artworks.
In the artist's paintings, we can see a love for the sea and vast spaces. The artworks are imbued with a characteristic play of light and shadow. The space, light, and temperature transport us into a pleasant and joyful world created by Magdalena.
Malena emphasizes the significant influence of her grandmother Ika, who was a colorist, a student of Jan Cybis, and also a resident of Sopot, and a graduate of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk with its seat in Sopot, at ul. Obrońców Westerplatte 24 (transformed into the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk after 1954). From an early age, Malena spent time in her grandmother's studio, absorbing the spirit of painting in its pure form. The artist creates oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and realizes her projects in mural painting. Her artworks can be found in collections in Poland, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Nepal, and the United States.
She is the author of murals such as "Mewy Origami" in Sopot, "Chłopiec portowy" in Gdańsk, and "Łódki origami" in Warsaw. She personally realized her projects. The Sopot mural is located on the wall of a tenement house in the center of Sopot, on Bohaterów Monte Cassino street.
She presents her works at numerous solo and group exhibitions. She participates in art festivals and painting plein airs, both national and international. In 2022, she curated, initiated, and collaborated on the first Interdisciplinary Plein Air in Winnica Nawrot in Mechelinki, where she participated twice in 2022 as a leading Polish artist.
